Tires: Low profile tire trouble, low profile tires, tire placard

Question
My tires have blown out 4 times in a year on NYC streets. (Car is a 2006 Mercedes S class.) I was told the problem was low profile tires, and Mercedes said there was nothing to be done.
Is there, in fact, something I can do to make my low profiles less likely to blow?
Thanks!

Answer
Melinda,

The obvious answer is to avoid the pot holes - which can be difficult to do.  The next most obvious answer is the speed aggravates the situation - slower speeds reduce the impact force.

However, adding a bit of inflation pressure will also help this to some extent.

On every vehicle sold in the US, there is a sticker – commonly called the tire placard - that lists the original tire size and the proper pressure for that size.  The placard is usually located on a doorpost or in the glove box – but sometimes it is located in the trunk or on the fuel filler door.

3 to 5 psi more will result in a little better impact resistance, but this also results in a little harsher ride.
