Tires: Winter Tires Ford Explorer, uniroyal laredo tires, uniroyal tires

Question
QUESTION: I am the new-to-me owner of a 2000 Ford Explorer Limited.  It's equipped with Uniroyal Laredo tires.   I live in an area that can get a good deal of snow in the winter.  I'm confused as to whether these are good tires for snow or not.  They are near new.

ANSWER: Cynthia,

Look on the sidewall of the tire and see if the letters M+S are there.  I believe that the tire you have is M+S or Mud + Snow. If you find these letters you should be OK.

If you have problems finding it go to a tire dealer and they should be able to help you identify the letters.

QUESTION: Yes, the tires have M+S, as they are UniRoyals top-of-the line all season tires.  Perhaps I should have been clearer.  I have only driven a front-wheel drive Subaru Sedan, manual, with studs in snow/ice here.  This SUV has AWD (always on), ABS on front and back, and these Uniroyal Tires.  I am wondering if I'll have the same reliable no-skid traction that I had on my Soob with these tires and the other capabilities this SUV has.... or should I get official snow tires, with studs?  I've never dealt with snow/ice with all seasons, AWD, and ABS.  Weather here?  We got six inches yesterday.  It's zero right now.

Thank you for your patience and opinion.

Answer
Cynthia,

It's going to be hard to beat the winter performance of your soob...

I don't believe that the tires on the Explorer are going to please you. In order to bring the winter performance of the Explorer close to the level of that of the Subaru I do recommend the studded snow tires.
