Tires: Tire sizes, honda odyessy, bolt pattern

Question
QUESTION: Hi Barry.  Do you see any problems if I put 215-60-R16 winter tires on my 04 Honda Odyssey, which originally came with 225-60-R16's?

These winter tires are being sold on rims, bolt pattern 5-114.3; would these rims fit my vehicle?

Regards,

Gavin

ANSWER: Gavin,

I do se a problem.

A Honda Odyessy has a 5X120mm bolt pattern, so the rims will not fit.

Second a P215/60R16 has a smaller load carrying capacity than a P225/60R16 - and that increases the risk of a load related tire failure - which sometimes has tragic results.

You need to be looking for rim and tire that specifically fit your van.  While the bolt circle is important, there is also thecenter hole size, the offset, and clearance of the brake parts.

QUESTION: I also have a 2001 Ford Grand Marquis that I was thinking of putting these tires/rims on if they wouldn't be good for the Odyssey.  Would these tires/rims be okay for it?  Do you know what the bolt pattern on the Ford Grand Marquis.  The original tire size is the same as the Odyssey - 225 60 R16.

Answer
Gavin,

There's more to fitment than just bolt pattern.  While the bolt pattern of the grand Marquis is 5 X 114.3mm, the offset, the cenetr hols and the claerance around the caliper are also considerations.  There is no easy way to express all of this except to know what vehicle that rims came from.

But I see the same problem for the Grand Marquis.  It requires a P225/.60R16 and the load carrying capacity issue applies there as well.
