Tires: Excessive wear on the inner portions of the rear tires (Gmc 3500), alignment settings, gmc 3500
QuestionHello, I recently purchased a used truck from a supposed reputable dealership. I have now driven it 220 miles and noticed major wear on the inner portions of both rear tires. I checked tire pressure and it is within norms. I know that the truck did have a fifth wheel in it and i am concerned with it having possible excessive weight as to bend the axle, or something. Should i be concerned and what could the possibilities for this happening.
AnswerChristof,
The first thing you should do is get an alignment. Be sure to ask for a printout. What you are likely to find is that there is too much camber - and perhaps caster. If true, then you have discovered the source of the wear pattern. The only question left would be when to replace the tires - because the wear is not going to get better.
But if all the alignment settings are in spec, then you know 2 things - there isn't a problem with a bent axle - and whatever the problem was, it has been fixed.
