Tires: Truck tires w/ Cab over Camper, gross weight ratings, inflation pressure

Question
Barry, hello!

My husband and I recently acquired a new GMC-2500HD and are hoping to take it camping with our cab over camper (in about two weeks AHH!)  We have checked the gross weight ratings and such for the truck...but know nothing about tires.  As of right now we are using LT tires with a possible E (off the top of my head) rating.  Could you offer us some advise on whether or not we'll need new tires for this truck considering the fact that we'll be traveling long distances on tragic roads with additional weight?  Thank you!

Answer
Becky,

On every vehicle sold in the US, there is a sticker - commonly called the placard - that will list the original tire size and the proper pressure for that size.  The placard is usually located on a doorpost or in the glove box, but sometimes it is located in the trunk or on the fuel filler door.

Locate that placard and read what it says for tire size and inflation pressure.

If you have checked that the vehicle is capable of handling the load you intend to put in it - and I'm talking payload here - then the tire listed on the placard will be adequate, too!
