Tires: tyres, Passenger Car Tires, Light Truck Tires

Question
hallo,
i would like to know the difference between, truck tyres, passenger and light truck tyres so that i can be able to identify either of them through the tyre markings.
maybe a range of truck tyres for instance  up to what mm can its section width be,and is iit possible to know a type of tyre just by looking at the width assuming the information is written on a paper and i cant see the tyre physically.
thank you

Answer
Esther,

This is a complex area because the "rules" differ.

First read up about tire standardizing organizations:

http://www.geocities.com/barrystiretech/tirestandardizingorgs.html

In there I discuss Passenger car tires and Light truck tires, but not truck tires.

There is much better commonality among the 3 standardizing organizations regarding truck tire sizing.  There are no letters in front of or behind the tire size.  It's hard to describe where the dividing line is between light truck and truck.  It is somewhat rim diameter (clearly 19.5's, 22.5's, 24.5's are truck), it is somewhat pressure (anything above 105 psi is clearly truck, but there are quite a few below 105), but the real telling determination is what part of the standards book the tire size appears in.  This makes it difficult to explain without the 3 books in front of you.

But if you are asking a question like this, there must be a different question you are trying to answer.  If it is plus sizing, I suggest you work with a retailer.  If you are designing from scratch, post back with the design intent and I'll try to guide to someone who can help you in this area.
