Tires: indents in tire sidewall, passenger car tire, bf goodrich

Question
I have BF Goodrich Momenta S/E P215/75R15 whitewalls with 14,000 miles and have noticed one slight indent in each of the sidewalls, and do experience some vibration on smooth roads at about 60-70 mph.  I just read a similar Q&A answered by expert "Jack," which left me a bit confused.

First Jack states "The indents in the sidewall of most tires is normal. The sidewall has poly cords and they are put together by sandwiching the cords between 2 layers of rubber. The indends you speek of are where they join them..." but he finishes with "I would take them back and ask for replacements."

So, my question is: is it normal or is it dangerous and should I replace them?? I doubt the retailer will replace them since warranty is for treadlife, and the treads are fine.  Thanks! Alex

Answer
Alex,

Every passenger car tire will have one of these for every ply.  They may be hard to find, but they are there.

Yes, it is normal.  No, it is not dangerous.  And contrary to many people's opinion, has very little to do with vibration and / or irregular wear.

The only reason Jack said to take the tires back (I read his answer quite some time ago!) was the tires were new and even though there's nothing wrong, it was a source of dissatisfaction.  In your case, the tires are far from new, and you won't have any leverage to bargain with, and the result won't be economically in your favor.
