Tires: Higher profile tires on original rim, plymouth grand voyager, better mileage

Question
Hi John,

Here's a sizing question going contrary to all others in the database. I am currently looking to replace all 4 tires on my 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager SE with a slightly HIGHER profile. The OE size is 215/65/R15, and I would like to go with 215/70/R15.

The reasons are: better comfort, better mileage, better for the engine, and better clearance. I have scraped my muffler over hardened snow more than a few times this winter (such is life in Canada). And, oh yes, a Grand Voyager looks terrible on thin tires. What were they thinking?

I don't care about less than accurate speedometer reading. I do not break speed limits, so even if I went 5 over it wouldn't make a big difference until i get used to adding 5 clicks. Also, I know that the bigger tires fit just fine, I have used one in the front for about a week.

The problem is, my Costco tire centre holds on to what their computer tells them, and that is the original size. They don't want to install Michelin X-Radials (my preferred tires) of the slightly higher profile, and I can't get them elsewhere except in Sam's Club, but they only have seconds. Costco WILL sell me the 215/70/R15 X-Radials, but I'd have to install them somewhere else, losing the warranty in the process.

I gave it a lot of thought, and have quite firmly decided to go with a 70 profile, rather then 65. Could you please give me any thoughts on this?

Best regards,

Victor

Answer
I have checked the fitment guide, and only 215/65R15 tires fit your mini van.
Besides the speedometer, it will also effect steering, handling and braking.
Now a 5% increase is so small, that it is not even notice.  Your idea of added height does not really apply.
Go to any store.  Get one of each and put them side to side.  Not much different for what you want.

Sorry, but I can not recommend anything other then OEM.
