Tires: replacing Subaru impreza tires, subaru impreza, replacement tires

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I need your experienced biased opinion please! I've been happy with
the Potenza RE92 that came on my 1999 Subaru Impreza Awd wagon
(195/60r15), but it's time for new tires. I do mostly local, stop & go driving
(hitting a few curbs along the way), very little freeway. I'd like a smooth ride,
and good handling and stopping. Please give me your advise on which tires to
choose. Thank you. Amy

ANSWER: Amy,

The best advice I can give is:  If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

QUESTION: But they are broke. And I need to replace them with - as I should have said in
my 1st message - something *other* than the Potenza RE92s. And that is....??
Thank you again, Amy

ANSWER: Amy,

But I don't understand why you want something other that the Bridgestones?  If this works for you, why change?

And I should tell you that I work for a major tire manufacturer and really should make brand specific comments.

QUESTION: Well, I can't get the OE RE92's locally, and I don't know how good the other
Potenza's are. I've heard negative things about the Potenza G009's. Even my
subaru dealership called a local tire shop for me (one they use for replacement
tires) who recommended a tire that 2 other places didn't like at all. So color me
confused. Thanks again

Answer
Amy,

Now I understand!

Frankly, I just don't have enough information about the thousands of tires that are on the market, but perhaps doing some research on Tire Rack's web site will help.

You had one recommendation - and 2 others say that recommendation was poor.  I assume they made their own recommendations!  If they didn't take into account that you liked the RE92's I wouldn't value their opinion very highly.  Some folks - and tire dealers are not immune - have unfounded prejudices.  Some tire dealers will base their sales recommendation on what makes them the most money.

It's not easy getting good reliable info - but Tire Rack's web site is probably the best source.
