Tires: Excessive wear on inside of all 4 tires, toyo proxes st, 2005 toyota 4runner

Question
QUESTION: Have 2005 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4WD and upsized to 265 50 20 Toyo Proxes ST directionals & chrome wheels.  The wheel offset is +10mm and is 8.5".  The tire is in spec (30.4" dia. vs 30.6" stock tires).  They appear wider than the stock tire (265 65 17) due to design. Had alignment done. Wear is every second tread block around inside of tire and on all four wheels although front is a little worse.

ANSWER: Allan,

It sounds like you have an alignment problem.  Be aware that alignment tolerances are too wide and with this combination, you need to be especially attentive to the tolerance - particularly toe.  At a minimum your vehicle should be within the inner half of the alignment tolerance.

QUESTION: Thanks.  Alignment was done with the stock wheels and Blizzack 17" winters mounted.  Does the alignment have to be done with the 20" wheels mounted and done each time I switch?  Also, would the technician need to know about dealing with oversize tires or the would the machine tell him seeing it likely would not be factory spec.?

Answer
Allan,

No, alignment doesn't have to be performed on the wider tires - unless the overall diameter of the tire is larger - which it isn't.

Remember that "alignment" generally means to the technician that the vehicle be "In Spec" - which I just told you isn't good enough.

Plus many alignment techs seem to think if there isn't a provision for adjustment - or the adjustment is at the minimum (or maximum) - they are done.  This is not true and a good alignment tech will know this.  Search until you find one of those.
