Tires: 1996 Chevy Van Express, chevy van, inflation pressure

Question
QUESTION: Would having P rated tires on a 1996 Chevy Van Express G1500 cause alot of swaying motion due to the fact that the sidewalls are too soft? We have trouble with swaying/bouncing around and when on the highway the other vehicles seem to be able to "push" the Van. (It is a Mark III conversion van) We purchased new tires while on vacation because of handling issues, we have since been told that the wrong type of tires were put on the van.  Any thoughts or opinions you have would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time

ANSWER: Christina,

Vans are noted for this characteristic and the real fix is a stiffer sway bar.

But honestly, you just have to realize this is a van and the big slab sides of it are vulnerable to wind - plus it is pretty tall.

QUESTION: What type of tire would you recommend?  I know that it will not fix the swaying problem, but I want to be sure we have the correct tires on the vehicle.

Answer
Christina,

Look for the vehicle placard - which will be on the driver's doorpost.  It will tell you the proper tire size and inflation pressure for that size.

This size ought to be large enough that any tire in that size should work.  But it might be advantageous to use 3 to 5 more psi than what is listed on the placard.
