i have a 2002 ford explorer, eddie bauer.  The tires on the suv now are 265
70R16, will 235 70R16 fit?  on the same rim?

The first thing you should do is find the vehicle placard which lists the original tire size and the proper pressure for that size.  The placard is usually located on a door post or in the glove box.

I think you will find the placard says the original tire size was P245/70R16.  This means that this is the tire size you should use.  Given that the Explorer is "one of those problem children", I would recommend you stay with the P245 or larger.
