Tires: Suburban 1500 4X4, rv trailer, retail tire

Question
I have just had my tires changed by a large retail tire outlet. I intend to tow an RV trailer, within the burbs limits. They advised me to go with a 10 ply. They fitted Dunlop RV XT. These are 265/75 R16. The stock size for Suburban 1500 4X4 2003 is 265/70 R16 and is on the plate. I was assured this size difference is OK. As a lay person I accepted their knowledge. I would value your opinion.
Thanks
Don

Answer
Don,

If you are towing within the limits defined by the vehicle manufacturer, then the original tires - and tires of the same size and type - are just fine for towing.

That means a P265/70R16 would have been fine and the LT265/75R16 Load Range E they advised you to get are an unnecessary expense.  Please note the "P" and the "LT".  These are not similar tires.

In fact, I recommend that if your vehicle came with "P"'s, you should not use "LT"'s, and vice versa.
