Tires: Low profile performance tires, high performance tires, tire failure

Question
I have a two year old car which has log profile performance tires.  Apparently they do not wear well and are expensive to replace. What is your advice regarding replacing them with conventional or regular tires?  I do drive conservatively.

Answer
Robert,

High performance tires may not wear well, but they are safer because they grip better.  They are also safer because there is a larger margin between what they are capable of and how the vehicle is used.  We engineers use the adage "Overdesign / Underutilze".  The speed rating is the underutilize part.

I can understand why some folks would like to reduce their overall costs, and I can see where going with a lower speed rating would help in that regard.  However, I feel the minimum spped rating is H.  The reason is that in order to pass an H rating a tire more or less has to have a cap ply.  This technological structure reduces tire failure much more that the increase in speed rating would seem to indicate.

So my advice would be not to use lower than an H rating.
