Tires: Tire load rating, proper inflation pressure, gmc 2500hd

Question
I recently purchased a tire recommended by a tire dealer for my GMC 2500HD crew cab truck. It has a rating of 1770lbs for a single tire at 65psi. The truck weighs 6100lbs and I have a camper which weighs 3300lbs dry. The truck has a GVW around 9400lbs. Shouldn't the dealer have suggested a tire with the overall capability of acommadating the GVW of the truck with a full load? With these tires it barely allows me to carry the 5 passengers it is capable of (4 x 1770 = 7080) Am I correct in my assumptions

Answer
Tony,

Here's what you need to do.

1)  Find your vehicle placard.  It should be on the driver's door or doorpost.  It will list the original tire size and the proper inflation pressure for that size.

2)  Look at your tires and see what they say.  If you went with a different size or load range (and knowingly did so), then you might be the source of the problem and the dealer isn't at fault here.

But if the the tire size is different and you didn't tell the dealer anything about changing size, or the size is the same, but a different load range, then he's going to have to make it right.  If this is the case, then tell him what you just told me, and remind him that lawsuits from failed tires due to overload can be very expensive.
