Tires: tire/wheel balancing, wheel weights, alloy wheels

Question
The car I'm looking to buy comes with 16" steel wheels or alloy wheels.  The steel wheels can have weights applied on both sides but the alloy wheels can only be balanced with a row of adhesive weights on the inside.  I'm concerned that the alloy wheels will not balance as well as the normal steel wheel and be more likely to go out of balance.  Which do you recommend and why?

Answer
Frank,

I'm a little unclear about why you would be concerned about alloy wheels and balancing, particularly since this is preventing you from purchasing the wheels.  You probably should buy the steel wheels, regardless of what I say.

There are several techniques that can be used to balance alloy wheels where the outer lip doesn't accept wheel weights.  One of these will work and any competent tire shop ought to know how to do it.
