Tires: 96 Ford Explorer replacement tires, goodyear fortera hl, pirelli scorpion str

Question
I'm looking to replace the Firestone Firehawk R4S tires that replaced my original Firestone ATX recalled tires on my 1996 Ford Explorer XLT V8.  I have 110k miles and think that I'll have the truck for another 1-2 years.  I have been reading reviews at Tire Rack, EPinions, and Consumer Reports and I am overwhelmed with the discrepancies in the comments from one tire to another.  I have always listened to the CR reviews and think that I trust them in their latest Nov. '04 review of SUV and light truck tires.  They like the Goodyear Fortera HL Edition the best followed by Pirelli Scorpion STR A, Hankook DynaPro, Kelly Safari Signature, and Dayton Timberline HT.  And there are still many more choices available.  When I spoke with our local Ford dealership and Town Fair Tire reps they both tried to steer me towards the Goodyear Wrangler RT S tires for about $93 ea.  My question is this, do you recommend relying on any one of these sources or can you make it easy for me and tell me what you think is the best all around suv tire?

Thanks for your help!

Scott

Answer
Hello, Scott
If you are only going to keep the car for another 1-2 years Then I don't think you can go wrong with the Goodyear. I would also look at the BF Goodrich Long Trail T/A or The Uniroyl Larado. Both are good cheap tires that should give you at least 2 years service.
