Tires: Michelin tires on alloy rims, michelin tires, michelin tire

Question
I'm a service technican at a busy tire shop.  For the past few months, my co-workers and I have been discussing the occurance of rim bead leaks, and corrosion in general that takes place when a Michelin tire has been installed on an aluminum, or alloy rim.  Although all tires eventually cause corrosion leading to rim leaks, it seems that this problem is more prevalant on Michelin tires.  Is there something in the compound used, or what?  We are eager to hear your input on the subject.  Thank you,

Answer
John,

I apologize for taking so long to reply.  I am in Germany attending a conference and I did not bring my computer.  I have borrowed one to do this.

I am of a different opinion.  I do not think tires cause corrosion of wheels, unless there is something else wrong.  What I am aware of is that clip on weights scratch the clear coat and the electrolytic action between the steel and the aluminum causes the aluminum to corrode.

However, I am willing to admit that I am not as close the situation as you are and may not be aware of a developing situation.

But I am aware that Michelin seems to use a very hard compound in the rim line, and perhaps it would be more likley to abrade the wheel.  Is it possible that you are confusing abrasion with corrosion?
