Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: What size engine?, honda cbr600 rr, motorcycle licence

Question
Hi Pat,

Just after a little bit of info, I'm brand new to motorbikes and I am currently working through my tests to get a full motorcycle licence. I am 6ft and weigh 18st (252lbs) and would like to know what size bike you recommend. Ideally I'd like a Honda CBR600 rr but obviously being brand new not sure this is the best choice. The advice I seem to be getting is that I should start with a 125 but I'm not convinced given my stature that would be the best choice. I'm not sure of what models are out there and what is best as a first bike for a guy as big as myself, I'm assuming that choice is ultimately up to the rider but any advice you could give (Especially around engine size) would be much appreciated. The last thing I want to do is make the wrong choice.

Thanks

J

Glad you asked.

My standard recommendation for a new rider is a 4 cyl bike no larger than 500cc or a 2 cyl bike no larger than 650cc.

The 600cc sportbikes are a couple-three years away yet for you. You need to spend some time on a more manageable machine.

I recommend something like the Suzuki or Kawi 650s, your size will fit them just fine. If something slightly bigger strikes your fancy, I think you can go up to about 800cc as long as it's a 2 cyl (twin). The Ducatis and the KTMs are quite something if you've got the funds.
