Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: getting a sit up bike to crank., kawasaki ninja 250, 2006 kawasaki ninja 250

Question
i recently bought a 2006 kawasaki ninja 250. it has been sitting up for a little over 2 years, i replaced it with a new battery, spark plugs, emptied gas tank and added seafoam to the new gas and oil, took off the carburetor, cleaned the bowls and jets with carburetor cleaner and put the carburetor back on. before i did this it would crank up enough to clear everything out from past build up, but would not stay idle without shutting off. now after i added and cleaned the carburetor and put everything back, the bike wont crank at all. what would be the problem?

Answer
I am not a technical person but do service my own motorcycles. It sounds as though you have performed all of the things I would try myself.

I do have a couple suggestions. It sounds as though the battery may have run down during service attempts. I would start by checking if it still is fully charged. I would also double check the battery terminal connections to make sure they are tight and free of any corrosion. From what you have described I don't see any reason other than low battery or poor connection why it would not turn over.

As far as it not idling. I also use Sea Foam and another additive to clean the jets and carburetor. I don't see that as a problem. You might want to check the fuel valve attached to the bottom of the gas tank for any debris and clean that if you haven't done so already.

I'm sorry I cannot give a more definitive response. I suggest you look around the Allexperts website for someone who is more knowledgeable on the technical issues. Another option would be a Ninja Owners website. I've found there are some very knowledgeable people on most websites.

Good Luck and please let me know what you ultimately find out.

Thanks for the question,
Tom
