Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Girly, inexpensive, SAFE, motorcycle, helmet

Question
I'm a 21 y/o female looking for a full-face helmet that is girly, fits well with long, thick hair and fairly inexpensive (Under $200 would be GREAT). I'm willing to pay more if that is posing a safety issue. I keep looking around and I'm having a lot of trouble finding helmets online and I'd prefer not to worry much over the return policies so I want to get this right the first time. So getting to the question...how do I measure my head? I've worn guys' helmets before but I have no idea what sizes they were. I know they need to fit snug to do the job. Can you tell me of good brand names or websites I could look at? Thanks!

Answer

Shoei Raid II TC7 Cout
Hi Lin,

The Motorcycle Helmet that comes to mind is the Shoei Raid 2 Couture TC7 Pink (search for this in Google and you'll be able to see prices). It's a little bit more than your budget but I would highly recommend it. I own a Blue Raid II, my girlfriend has a black Raid II and one of my friend's girlfriends owns the Raid II Couture TC7 Pink and loves it!!

Motorcycle Helmet brands to look out for are Arai, Shoei, AGV and Suomy. These are all used in professional racing so a lot of the technology has been tried and tested on the track.

There are other helmets to look at, HJC do some good helmets, the CS or FG models are quite good although I haven't personally owned them, I'm told they are quite noisy.

I hope that helps you find a good motorbike helmet, if you want a cheaper Shoei Raid II go for the single colour versions (White, Black, Blue, Grey or Red) as the extra money you pay is for the graphic designs.

Helmet Fitting
This topic is best answered in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KytJa4i96v4 it explains everything you need to know to get a helmet fitted correctly. Ideally go to your local motorcycle shop, get fitted then buy your helmet online to get a good price.

As for websites I would go to Motorcycle-Superstore.com as they have excellent prices, in the UK I use Sportsbikeshop.co.uk (they deliver worldwide).

Many thanks,
Steve
