Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: downshifting, speed, shift

Question
I have a Kawasaki 500EX. I would like to know do you bring the clutch in ,downshifting, let out the clutch slowly as you give the bike a little gas, as you go fromm 4th -1st throughtout each gear?

Answer
I am not sure I understand your question. You seem to have described the process perfectly. All you need is practice.

If you're asking how _I_ do it, I always do it in conjuction with braking. I downshift exactly as you've described while using the brakes to slow.

The reason you downshift as you go is so you're always in the correct gear for the speed you're traveling.

Many riders do not release the clutch when downshifting and slowing with the brakes. They keep it squeezed in, shifting down the gears, but not releasing the clutch until it's time to go again.

Either way is acceptable. I prefer to release the clutch to use the engine braking, and so the bike is always "ready to go," but it's generally not necessary--it is personal preference. Either way is safe and efficient.
