Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Motorcycle shopping, triumph street, small fortune

I am currently in the market for my first motorcycle. I am a big guy 6'0 230 lbs. I really like the Triumph street triple, but I have been getting some mixed reviews regarding Triumph reliability and maintainance issues. Would this be a good bike to start with and would it cost me a small fortune in upkeep?

A bit of an open question, which I can try and answer, but before I commit myself, what experience have you had with motorcycles.  What training will you go through ?

The Street Triple is a bit of a hooligan bike, and perhaps not a good first bike, not very forgiving
