Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: straight bars versus curved, rider fatigue, stock motorcycle

Question
Hey - I'm interested in buying a 1994 Virago which is in pretty good condition. My only concern is that it has straight (drag) bars instead of curved.  I actually think this looks nicer, but I'm concerned about safety and comfort.  Will I be more or less safe and comfortable with straight handlebars?
Thanks!

Answer
While the straight or "drag" bars may be offer an element of additional style, they may affect control and comfort. Stock handlebars are usually designed to provide the best ergonomic match for the type of riding that a particular motorcycle was designed for. Often  a rider will alter fit and function of a stock motorcycle by adding aftermarket accessories. The term drag bars indicates that these handlebars would probably work best in drag racing applications. Is this the type of riding you propose to engage in or are you planning to using your Virago as a daily rider?
Safety depends on the ability to steer the vehicle effectively and control mechanical operation of the throttle and brake. Rider posture also has a direct effect on safe control and minimizing rider fatigue. When considering aftermarket products, control effectiveness and comfort are primary concerns, style should be secondary. Noting these considerations, if you feel that the bike is a good buy, you can purchase the bike and change the handlebars. Hope this helps, good luck and good riding.
