Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: oil, oil filler cap, xvs 1100

Question
for the safe operation of my recent purchase a 2000 xvs 1100 yamaha I would like to make sure all fluids are fine ,so if you can tell me what the best oil is for the motor and the tranny and the best way to tell if the right amount is in there ,thank you for any help

Answer
The type of oil you use is a very personal decision. There are many correct answers. Personally, I would use a motorcycle-specific variable-weight (10/40, 20/50, etc.) synthetic or synthetic blend like Castrol or Amsoil.

I don't know how to check the oil in that bike. There may be a sight glass (little window) in the lower engine case, or there may be a dipstick on the oil filler cap. Best check the owner's manual for that one.
