Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: motorcycle classes, motorcycle courses, motorcycle classes

Question
Are there public classes offered by the DMV?  If so, what's the difference between the public and private classes in MN.

Thanks!

Answer
The state program runs moped and basic and advanced motorcycle courses from April through September at about 30 different locations across Minnesota. See www.motorcyclesafety.org or call 800-407-6677 for a course near you.

Riders Edge and CSS offer courses as well. I guess these could be considered "private," as in it's a non-state entity offering them. They're a good deal more expensive than the state courses, but the rider training content is the same.

Really, the only difference is price and availability. State courses run 14.5 hours and $160. The non-state courses may be a little longer, and run in the $200-300 range. The curricula are the same.

Hope that helps.
