Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: 1st dirt bike, riding boots, dirt bike

Question
I am interested in buying my 10 year old son, 107lbs a dirt bike. I was thinking about going with a 100 however he has no experience except with a 4-wheeler. My research indicates a dirt bike is safer than a 4-wheeler? I am a overprotective mother with little riding skills but am willing to let him learn the right way with the correct bike and equipment. Any advice you can provide on brand, size, lessons, gear, safety etc. would be greatly appreciated

Answer
Kathleen,
A 100/150 will be more than enough for now and the years to come.  He is going to have to re-learn how to ride, since everything on a 4-wheeler is either different or the reverse of a 2-wheeler.

Personally, I would recommend a Honda.  They don't win all the races, but they are the most dependable.  And, with that comes safety.  Their customer service is typically better than the others too.

Equipment?  It varies with the type of riding and weather conditions.

At a MINIMUM, do not let your son ride his bike without a DOT or SNELL APPROVED helmet (full-face) and eye-protection;  leather or reinforced riding boots and gloves;   and spinal protection.

If he is going to ride a little harder, you will want to invest in riders body armor.

There are several riding schools and clinics around the world.  Tell me what major city you are closest to and I'll put you in contact with such a school or clinic.

Cheers for now.
