QuestionHi Pat- I have an '06 Sportster 1200 and would like to do some off the pavement riding. What do you recommend in the way of tires? Ideally, I'd like to turn my bike into a dual sport machine. Thanks.
AnswerBill, tires are such a personal choice/preference that there's no way I could ever give you an answer. But I can help you in your search.
I would use the same type of tires used by riders of BMW F650s and GS1150s. I estimate that these bikes are suited to about 50/50 on/off road use. The GS is probably closer in weight to the Sporty than the F650, so I'd focus on that.
Unfortunately, there is no "one best" tire that these bikes use. I found a review of a bunch of different tires for the F650s: http://faq.f650.com/FAQs/TireOpinionsFAQ.htm There you can get an idea of how they handle and what they look like, and you should be able to decide on a few that are suitable then find out if they come in a size you can use on your H-D.
