Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: 2006 Sportster 1200C, first timer, joe thanks

Question
I am new rider 6'4" and am looking to buy my first bike.  The Sportster 1200C seems like a logical first bike. I've been told by many friends that it isn't the bike for me because of the size and also that it's more of a women's bike. I'm looking for something that I can learn on but can grow into as well.

I'm looking for some advice on whether I should step up and get either a Softail or Dyna because of the size or am I biting off more than I can chew with a bike of that size and weight?

Answer
Joe,

Thanks for the question. You're in a tough spot to be sure. First off, the Sportster is a favorite of the ladies, but it is by no means a "ladies" bike. The thing I like about them is that they are light, lean and fast, and usually good handling. While the bigger Harleys are nice as well, I like the simplicity of the Sportster.

The problem is, you are quite tall, maybe too tall for a Sportster. The other problem is that as a beginning rider, you do not have the skills yet to safely ride a big heavy bike like a Dyna or Softail. Between those two, I'd probably recommend the Softail as it is a bit more docile than the Dyna.

But make no mistake - it is a large, powerful bike. And for a first-timer, it can be too much.

Personally, I'd stop listening to your friends and listen to yourself. Go sit on a Sportster (try the "C" model, or Custom, it has more leg room) and sit on a Softail. See what you think of both. If you think the sportster fits you better, get it. You can always sell it later and upgrade.

I'm just afraid that if you get a big bike like a Dyna, you are going to lose control of it and have an accident or a tipover. You'll probably find that the Sportster is the better deal and easier to ride, and trust me it is plenty fast. Plus, with the new engine, they are really smooth.

As you say, it is the 'logical' choice!

Enjoy the ride,
