Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Moped license??, moped scooter, rising gas prices

Question
I was wondering that if you would have to have a motorcycle license for a moped or is that covered under the Class D drivers license? With rising gas prices expected to hit over 5 dollars per gallon in Wisconsin, I simply don't feel like dropping close to 100 dollars for a full tank of gas.

What are some things to look for in a good quality moped, and what do you want to stay away from. Also what is the maintance like on a moped?

Any info would be appreciated especiall about the licenses.

Thanks for your time and help
Nick

Answer
Nick,

Thanks for the email. In most states, you can ride a moped (or scooter) 49cc or smaller with a regular driver's license. IF the moped/scooter is larger than that, you will need to get an endorsement.

Things to look for in a moped/scooter include good brakes (discs, preferably), good build quality and a good history of performance (look online for ratings and reviews).

At this time, it's best to stay away from scooters made in China. They just don't have the quality yet. In time they will, but for now avoid them.

As for maintainence, you need to make sure brake pads are good, change the oil at the recommended time and keep tabs on tire pressure and wear.

Good luck!
