Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Choosing the best bike, v strom 650, 750 honda

Question
I currently own a V-Strom 650 and have decided to switch to a cruiser.  The two bikes that really stand out for me are the Shadow 750 (Honda) and the V-Star 650 (Yamaha).  I would say I'm a intermidate rider and like to go for the long quite cruises.

Both are know reliable brands/model but is the cc difference noticable or are there any other points that can make my descision easier.

Thanks for any help on the matter.

Answer
Hi Dan,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I was gone on vacation.

I think the V-Star is going to be too small for distance riding. In the 1970's, people would go coast to coast on Honda 450's and all I can say is Thank God those days are behind us. Fine bikes, those old Hondas, are fine bike (I have one), but it taught me a valuable lesson: when going long distance, bigger is most definetly better.

I'd even say the Shadow 750 is in the grey area of almost-too-small, but my cousin had one with saddlebags and a windscreen and it was sufficient for touring, as long as it was SOLO touring. If you plan on loading up a passenger and supplies, you'll need something bigger. For running around town two-up, it's OK, just don't plan on doing a lot of passing.

For doing serious distance with enough power to pass a semi on an uphill grade while loaded with gear, I think an 1100 (for a cruiser) is about the realistic minimum.

I know there are some seriously huge cruisers out there, but  for real touring you don't need them. I really think a bike between 900cc and 1200cc is going to good for any kind of long distance, while staying relatively light to stay manageable in town yet big enough to easily tour solo or two up with all your gear.

The V-Star is a nice bike, but it will be a disappointment for touring, too buzzy on the highway, no passing power and not enough carrying capacity.

If you are on a budget and were considering a new V-Star or Shadow, see if the dealers have any leftover 2004 or 2005 models in a larger bike they are willing to make a swinging deal on. You may end up with a bigger bike for the same price.

Good luck,
