Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): MOWER PROBLEMS, carburetor body, adjustment screws

Question
QUESTION: i HAVE A CRAFTSMAN ELECTRIC START, 6.25 HP,EAGER-1,MODEL#917,377351 MOWER. MY PROBLEM IS IT STARTS BUT WILL ONLY STAY RUNNING A FEW SECONDS.

ANSWER: Hello Jack:

Remove, Disassemble and Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I Use Gunk). I have Found that Most People can Use a Breakdown/IPL and Disassemble the Carburetor Enough for Proper Cleaning. You Only have to Remove the Bowl, Float Pin, Float and Needle Valve and Any Adjustment Screws that Go Into the Carburetor Body. The Welch Plugs Do Not have to be Removed. Then Soak the Carburetor Body and Parts in a 1 Gallon Can of Gunk Carburetor Cleaner Overnight. The Can has a Parts Tray Inside it for the Small Parts. Once the Carburetor and Parts are in the Cleaner, you can Replace the Lid for Safety and to Prevent Accidential Spillage. Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install New Parts if Required. Go to this Site Addy, http://www3.sears.com/ and Enter the Model Numbers in the Upper Left Search Box and Click Go. Then Visually Verify the Equipment and CLick Continue. From this Page you can View Diagrams or Parts Lists for you Equipment. Since this is a Tecumseh Engine, I have 2 PDF Site Addys that May Assist you Also. They are; 1- http://www.tecumsehpower.com/CustomerService/BSI.pdf and 2- http://www.cpdonline.com/692509.pdf. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

QUESTION: Hi, tried cleaning and it still won't start.
ANSWER: Hello Again Jack:

Send me the Model Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. Also, Did you Look at the PDF Sites I Gave you? They can Answer Many Questions and Give you Techncial Advice that will Assist you in Locating the Problem. I Have had to Soak Some Carburetors 2 or 3 Times to Get Them Clean. If you Spray Starter Fluid Into the Carburetor Throat, Can you Keep the Engine Running for Longer than a Few Seconds? Is this an OHV Engine? Thanks.

QUESTION: Hi John, It still won't start, Itried spraying starting fluid in it and it starts and dies right away, the Engine model number is 143976252, And I am not sure what a OHV Engine is, Is there something else I can clean or soak the carb in besides Gunk. Thanx Jack
ANSWER: Hello Again Jack:

If you can Use Starte Fluid to Run the Engine, then the Carburetor or the Intake Gasket is the Problem. I have Viewed the Breakdown and This is Not a OHV Engine. Other than the Carburetor, the Only Other Thing I can Think of thet May Cause this Problem is the Flywheel Key. It is Rare for the Key to Cause the Engine to Start and Quit but It has and Does Happen. The Timing of the Plug Firing is Thrown Off Just Enough that the Plug Fires Too Late in the Compression Stroke and as the RPM Increase the Engine Dies because the Plug is Firing too Late in the Compression Stroke. Were the PDF Site of Any Assistance to you? You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the T. Then Select Tecumseh. Then Select Don't have Part Numbers. Then Enter the Model Numbers. Then Select your Model and Download the File for Online Viewing. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

QUESTION: Hi, could you explain to me the procedure in changing the flywheel key thanxx.

Answer
Hi Jack:

I am Sorry. I Thought I had Included the Instructions, but I see I Forgot. They are as Follows. Remove the Blower Housing (metal engine cover). Remove the Flywheel Nut or Starter Cup (Depends on the Model). Now Attach a Steering Wheel Puller to the Flywheel Using the Threaded Holes in the Flywheel. Tighten the Puller. Now Hit the Puller with a Hammer. Repeat this Procedure Until the Flywheel Pops Up or can be Lifted Off the Crankshaft. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
