Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: bike choice: Suzuki Katana 600, suzuki katana 600, 2004 suzuki katana 600

Question
Recently , I was offered to purchase a 2004 Suzuki Katana 600 at a bargain price (400 miles and no abuse). I was wondering if this is a quality bike. What sort of reliability can I expect.

Also, I would share this bike with a friend that is a newbie. Is this bike too sporty for an MSF beginner? I currently ride an SV650. How comparable is the Katana to the SV?

Thank you.

Answer
Jeremy,

The Katana 600 is a quality bike and highly reliable. It uses a detuned version of the older GSXR-600 motor and all the bugs have been worked out. It's heavier and more comfortable than the GSXR, and is good for sport riding and light sport touring (just add soft bags). Very fast and nimble, though, faster than your SV650. If you take good care of it, it should last for years, even decades. You did not say what price you were offered on the Kat, so hard for me to say if you truly got a good deal. It is a good bike, however.

For a rank beginner that has no street experience, I would say the Katana 600 is way too much bike at this point. They need something a lot less hyper and sensitive, probably more like the SV. For true beginners, I always recommend something VERY used to start with, since most beginners will crash their first bike, or at least tip it over or something like that. It's a lot easier (and cheaper) to fix a GS500 or an older CB750 than a shiny new Katana. Plastic is NOT cheap. A friend of mine tipped over his SV650S in his driveway and busted up the fairing to the tune of $550. Ouch.

If you're getting a great deal on the Kat, get it and enjoy it. It's a good bike that is reliable, capable and fun to ride.

Good luck,
