Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Quality Bike??, bike link, compression check

Question
I am searching the internet for a new or used motorcycle (dirt bike).  I have come across a bike on ebay but no one is bidding on it.  It is being sold through an online company and the bike link is listed below.

My question is whether or not this is a quality dirt bike?  I am not planning on racing or anything.  I simply want to ride around and have fun.  Through creeks, fields, trails, etc..  I have searched all over the internet and can't find any product reviews.  What do you think?

Thank you,

Paul

Answer
Paul,

Thanks for the question. Sorry it took a while to answer, I've been on vacation.

The bike is imported from China, that's why you can't find any info on it. Nothing against the Chinese, but I would pass on it. The price is tempting I'm sure, but the build quality of Chinese bikes- especially engines-  is very poor at this point, and if you have a problem or need parts, you are totally out of luck (unless you actually live IN CHINA). No one in the USA will work on it for you.

I would look for a used bike in to 250cc range from any of the Japanese makes (Honda and Yamaha especially). It won't be as cheap up front, but at least it will last if you take care of it, and you can get parts and service if there is a problem. I'd say any bike 250-350cc from the last 5 or 6 years will be what you are after. If it's been modified, just have a mechanic check it out, especially with a compression check. If the owner objects to getting it checked out, don't buy it. Try to get a clean, stock bike if possible.

Eventually, Chinese bikes will have better quality, I have no doubt. But for now, they don't, so if you see a bike with a brand you don't recognize and can't find info about, just pass on it, no matter how good the price.

Good luck,
