Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Honda Silverwing ABS Scooter, honda silverwing scooter, motorcycle safety foundation

Question
Okay, my question is do you need a scooter license to drive a Silverwing scooter, and if so what age to h ave to be to get one. Also  do you need insurance for the scooter.

Answer
Hi Michael,

Thanks for the questions. I am going to assume you are in the United States (I get questions from all over the world).

Because of the engine size, you will need a motorcycle endorsement to legally ride a Honda Silverwing scooter. You need to check with the DMV in your state to see what is required to get the endorsement. Most likely, you will be required to take a written test, and a riding test.

One way to take care of both is to take an Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Beginner Rider course in your area. You can find class locations, times and fees by going to www.msf-usa.org. It is a two-day (weekend) class, and it's worth it. If you pass the class, most states will give you your endorsement when you take your completion certificate to the DMV. However, that varies from state to state, so check with the DMV where you live.

You will most definitely need insurance on the scooter. Because of its size, most insurance companies (and police and the state in general) will consider the Silverwing to be a motorcycle. You may want to remind your insurance company that it is actually a scooter, it may help on the rates (or it may not).

Be sure to take the class. Just because it's a scooter doesn't mean it can't crash and that you won't get hurt as if you were on a motorcycle. It may look like a scooter, but underneath, it's a motorcycle. Keep that in mind.
