Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Harley Davidson Sporster 883 and 1200, harley davidson sporster, sporster 883

Question
What is the diference in weight and HP between the Harley 883 XL and the Harley 1200 XLH Sportser and length of each bike. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Herman,

Thanks for the question. It took me a bit of time to get ahold of the information, especially concerningthe new Sportsters. Basically it breaks down like this:

The ONLY difference between the 1200 and 883 Sportster models (both custom and Sport) is horsepower. The 883 makes 48hp, but the 1200 makes an even 60hp, and also a bit more torque as well (as a larger displacement engine usually will).

There are NO differences in frame length, overall bike weight or length. ALL the Sportsters use the exact same frame, regardless of displacement. The displacement change does not effect bike weight.

The only differences that could effect weight is the addition or subtraction of a front disc brake- about 10 pounds. If the bike has three disc brakes, it'll be a bit heavier (but personally, I'll take the better brakes).

I got the information from Harley-Davidson, so I'm sure it's correct. The new Sportsters are better for distance riding now that they have the rubber-mounted engines. The 1200S model (the "sporty" model) will set you back about $10,300 in basic black, and a couple hundred more for other colors.

Hope that helps!
