Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: newbie, 1977 honda cb750, dirt bikes

Question
Hello I've recently received a 1977 honda cb750 and I have no riding experience except with my cousins dirt bikes, What can i do to make sure I operate my bike correctly and more importantly safely? I know lots of people who have been involved in accidents and I'm starting to come under the impression that it's next to impossible to ride truly safely. I'd really love to use my bike more often but my parents mentors ect. are opposed to the idea for the above reasons. My question is are there ways to become a safe rider? what are my resources for becoming a better rider? where can I find actual statistics on accident demografics such as age of those involved, eduction of those involved, the actual types of motorcycles most involved in accidents, ect. thank you for any direction, advise, or help you can offer -Chad (new 18 year old hopeful)

Answer
Hi Chad,
Thanks for writing to me. TO start off with, I want to make one thing very clear - it IS possible to ride a motorcycle safely. All it requires is the right technique, maturity, and respect for the road.
Having said this, getting you fully confident will be a step-by-step process. I'm here to help! To begin, I suggest you buy this book:
Proficient Motorcycling, by David Hough.
It has the statistics you want, and also excellent riding techniques.
Get back to me with ANY more doubts you have. I'm sure we can get over this motorcycle phobia together!
Good luck,
Anil
