Answer

Car Guy
This a ways outside of my own 'personal knowledge' and more dependant upon what I have read and heard from other industry professionals. At this point my money would be spent on the Maruti. Why? Cheaper (is certainly a factor but only a small one) hey have a better network of dealers and repair facilities and parts availability. They also have extremely customer satisfaction number which are very hard to argue with. The Tata Nano also has great ratings but they are the 'new guy' and are still in growth and market share capture mode.

Here is what one report said:

Maruti Udyog Limited, a subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation of Japan, has been the leader of the Indian car market for about two decades. Its manufacturing plant, located some 25 km south of New Delhi in Gurgaon, has an installed capacity of 3,50,000 units per annum, with a capability to produce about half a million vehicles. The company has a portfolio of 11 brands

Maruti tops customer satisfaction according to the J.D. Power Asia Pacific India Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) Study Maruti is India's largest passenger car company, which accounts for over 50 per cent of the domestic car market Maruti have a sales network of 562 outlets in 372 towns and cities, and provide maintenance support to customers at 3000 workshops in over 1400 towns and cities The company boasts about its products, which offer unsurpassed fuel efficiency, low maintenance costs and easy availability of genuine parts. MUL extended its product range to include vans, multi-utility vehicles (MUVs) and midsized cars.

MUL’s Competitive Advantage Size Low Initial investment Unique concessions from the government Indigenous sourcing of components Fully depreciated plants High labour productivity

The bottom line is this ... If you want tried and true fuel efficient predictable performance from a known and well respected tried and true entity that you can have repaired almost anywhere in your area then pick the Maruti if you are more of a risk taker and an "early adapter' who believes Tata products potential and brand value ( so far) and like the cooler look of the Tata Nano then jump on board the Tata Express ... either way you will probably be a happy consumer ...
