Used Cars: Used car, totyota, mechanical inspection

Question
Im a college student and I am hoping to buy my first car this summer. I want a sedan, either a totyota or a hyundai. But also since the area in which I live in gets alot of snow I need a car with four wheel drive. How much should I spend on a car. I was thinking $5,000, but is that a too low a price?I need also a car with low enough mileage like 50,000 or below preferably. Is it better to buy used from a  dealer or a private seller. But then what abhout the checking of the car by a mechanic, could I still have to do that even if I buy it from a dealership? How much per week would I have to spend on the upkeep of the car. My job, doesnt pay me that much per week ($200+) so I need to be able try and get another job? I a just nervous as i will definatley be needing a car this summer for my internship but regret don't want to regret buying the car as it would be too much for me to afford on the upkeep and such every week. What would be a good first car in your opinion. i will be using the car hopefully if i get my internship probably most days

Answer
I appreciate your honesty, you really are green at buying a car, so lets see if we can find a vehicle that will outlast your investment.

Buying a car in your price range is buyers beware, miles don't come into play CONDITION is all that matters, a mechanical inspection is a must, be it from private seller or dealer.

You got plenty of time before purchase,  being a college student you know good things in life come with study, in this case it's all about not ending up with a lemon in your driveway.

I would like for you to study my website in detail, main links will be " Test Drive " Mechanic " History and Negotiate,,, from there get back to me with any questions you may have,,, you asked if it's better to buy from dealer or private seller, navigate to this link on my website and you can make that decision. http://www.usedcartips.org/privatevsdealer.html
