Mitsubishi Repair: Engin Engine Hesitation of Mitsubishi Mirage DE COUPE 1998, coolant temperature sensor, engine hesitation

Question
Dear Anthony,
I hope you can help me with this problem.  I have a 1998 Mitsubishi, Mirage DE Coupe, Manual.  My car didn't have any problem until a little while ago when an engine hesitation problem has come up as follows:

When I start the car, it seems that engine is about to cut off sometimes (for instance, any light on car is dimming and getting back over and over) but it survives until it's totally warm and works normally.  However, when I start driving the car, engine hesitates severely. This probelm continues to exist for about 3~4 minutes and after that engine functions normally. I have this problem every time I start the car and the engine is already cooled down.

I should also mention that "engine check" light comes on when I start the car.

Can you please tell me what the problem is?

Many thanks

-Alireza

Answer
Alireza,
Your 'engine check' light should come on when your car first starts, but it should turn off within a few seconds.  If your check engine light comes on and stays on for a long period of time while you're driving, then you may have a problem with a sensor or with your ignition.

It sounds like you may need a general tune-up with following items:
- Spark plugs (should be replaced ever 3 years/30,000 miles)
- Spark plug wires (should be replaced with new spark plugs)
- Check the distributor cap, and replaced if worn
- Replace PCV valve (should be replaced every 1-2 years)
- Replace Air Filter (should be replaced every 1-2 years)
- Replace Fuel Filter (should be replaced every 2-3 years)
- Replace coolant (should be flushed every 2-4 years)
- Inspect EGR valve (should be checked every 2-4 years)

Your problem may also be with a sensor.  Many times, cars will have stuttering and hesitation problems with a cold engine when the engine coolant temperature sensor is malfunctioing.  If you have an AutoZone in your area, they can check your car's computer for free (i.e. find out why your check engine light stays on).  Drive over to them if your check engine light remains on and have them test it.
Good luck!
