Used Cars: Dodge Neon, dodge neon, 50 cars

Question
Should I buy a 2001 dodge Neon that has been taken care of EXTREMELY well with one owner? This car is for my teenager.

Answer
Well if it is a 1 owner, that has been taken care of extremely well, you could end up on the right side of this 50/50 car.  I call these 50/50 cars because I think there is a 50% chance them to be good cars, and 50% chance they are junk.  For some reason there seems to be no in between on these cars.  Just keep a couple of things in mind about the neons, yes they do great gas mileage, and yes they are affordable, but even when they were new, they were cheap cars, and there is no way to talk up....cheap!  Compared to comparable cars, you will hear more road noise, more wind noise, have a rougher ride, and be LESS safe in the event of a wreck.
I personally would prefer a higher mileage import, honda, toyota or nissan, than a neon.
But if the car makes it past about 85-110k miles without blowing a transmission, you might be ok with this car, because like I said earlier I have seen these cars run forever, and people love them, however, I have yet to see very many neons that were not junk!
And just to try and show an extra amount of fairness to these cars I will also add this, I think a lot of the reason why most of these cars are junk, are how they were taken care of.  Most of the people that would really purchase one of the cheapest new cars on the road is obviously because they can not afford an upper level car, and unfortunately, those are the people, that for the most part, do not maintenance their cars like they are supposed to.  So if there was any possibility of there being a good neon, you are probably looking at one of them, just know going in their reputation is as bad as it gets in the car world, so if you buy this car, prepare for the worse, and hope for the best!
