Used Cars: buying from private person, pa philadelphia, private person

Question
HI. I have a little problem. Im about to see (in case if all is alright than buy it) a car in New York. Im from PA, Philadelphia. How will I drive this car home if I bought it? There is no license plate number, title in hand only, private person. First of all I want to have this car at home, than sell my old car, and than I think register this "new" car. How to do all this stuff? Documents? Price? Please as much info as you can. Thank you so much!!!

Answer
Hello and thanks for your question. First off I am not an expert in your state but I will tell you what happens here in MI.  You will need to have a proof of insurance with you when you pick up the new car. Tell your insurance agency that you are thinking of buying a car and you would like a "binder" so you can drive it home. If you don't buy the car just let them know that you didn't buy it and they will cancel the temporary policy they wrote for you. As far as the plate, when you buy the car make sure that the owner( the same name that is listed on the title)writes you a receipt and dated proof of purchase. That is all you need to drive it "directly" home. In Michigan you can get a ticket if the police determine that you are not in a direct route home, for example if you buy a car in NY live in PA and get pulled over in OH you will most likely get fined. This is kind of a gray area and it is at their discretion so be careful. It also has to be the same day that you bought the vehicle so don't stay overnite. What you want to do can be done here in Mi but I would call your DMV to be sure. Hope this helps.
Thanks again, Shane
