Chrysler Repair: 2001 PT Cruiser Timing Belt Tensioner, timing belt tensioner, timing belts

Question
I am planning on having my timing belt replaced along with the water pump and tensioner since the car has almost 90K miles on it.  A.  What is the advisable milage at which the timing belt should be replaced?  B.  I'm told that the new tensioner is wider than the original one requiring a new side engine cover (over the timing belt, etc.).  Is there not an orig. sized tensioner available to preclude spending an additional $220 for a cover that otherwise would NOT be needed?

Answer
Hi Ray,
I haven't a manual for the '01 PT cruiser so I'm uncertain which engine type you have. On timing belts, I would advise removing the timing belt area top cover, if there is one at the cam sprocket, so that you can inspect the belt for condition. Depending on climate the standard suggestion of 100k may be too conservative so you may have to do nothing now if there are no other problems. On the tensioner, that would be something to inquire of at a dealer parts counter. Let me know which engine and I may be better able to answer.
