Used Cars: Used Car Problems, tie rod ends, rear brakes

Question
I bought a used car for my daughter.  The person I bought it from stated he had done all of the maintenance himself.  When I bought the car I knew it would need new tires, oil change and inspection sticker.  When I took it to the shop for these things I was dinged for $2300.00 due to a broken rotor, vifrtualy no rear brakes, bad tie rod ends and an exhaust that had been repaired with household screws and a coat hanger.  The car was declared unsafe and had to be repaired to be road worthy. The seller did not disclose these needed repairs nor did he state "as is" in the bill of sale.  I am asking for reimbursement of the repairs minus the tires, oil and inspection sticker.  If this person does not pay, do I have a legitimate case for court?

Thank you,
Jamie

Answer
Well it sounds as though you purchased this from an individual.  With that being said, I just dont think you will have much of a chance in court.  When you buy from an individual, you kinda sacrifice being covered on things like that, simply because car lots have to answer to the states Used Car Commissions as where individuals do not.  I do not know what state you are in, but you should have some type of a Used Car Commission that you should be able to call to see if you can do anything.  Every state is different and you may be able to do something legally, but you need to call them to make sure.
