Used Cars: used car question, attorney generals office, comparable vehicle

Question
Hello
I just bought a used car here in CA a Volvo 850 turbo. After driving off the lot i notice that the odometer does not work, and also the is a huge oil leak. Now i sign a as is contract and pay for the car. Do i have any recourse? Is it against the law to sell a car when the odometer does not work?

Answer
in Texas the dealer is required to notify you and recieve your signature on a form stating that the title doesn't have a working odometer, these vehicles are called tmu or true miles unknown and are worth as much as 70% less than a comparable vehicle with a working odo.   If they don't have your signature on this form, take it back and tell them to cancel the contract or you are going to report them to the attorney generals office and seek legal counsel, I'm betting they will work with you.  At least they would in Texas.  I do not know anything about CA law but shouldn't be much different as a lot of it is federal.
good luck..
