Used Cars: 96 BMW 328i, bmw 328i e36, head gasket problems

Question
Hi,
I am in Holland and would appreciate your advice

I am considering purchasing a 1996 BMW 328i (E36) with 109 000 kms, about (65 000 miles) for about 4500 euros. Do you have any idea about the common problems with this car & what should I be looking for, besides a complete service history.

Answer
Well the e36 is considered one of the best models because toward the end of its production there were ultimately no bugs.  Most the common problems with the model were solved in the first 2 years of production, so as far as specific common problems with those cars, there aren't any for your year.  This is based on the US version of the car though (It shouldn't be very different from the version you would have over there) but I cannot be certain the reliability is the same.  I would just be concerned with the usual things.. like looking for build-up around the exhaust tip, oil around the head gasket, problems getting it into and out of gear, check the brakes & make sure it handles properly.  The same stuff you would do with any car, because per my research all of the common problems on E36's were corrected with the ~1995 models... As always, try and get the seller to allow you to have a mechanic check it out, thats the best kind of inspection you can do (although there is ALWAYS a risk when buying a car).... Other than that, you shouldn't have any problems, its a pretty good car with decently low km's.  I wish you luck with the purchase, and if you have any more questions feel free to ask.  Thanks!
