Trucking: Truck driving school, cdl license, truck driving school

Question
Hi, I'm interested in signing up for a course to get a CDL license. I'm kind of discouraged though because every job posting I see requires at least a minimum of 1yrs experience. Could you advise me on how to get over this hurdle of finding employment, if I do decide to enroll in this school?

Answer
Gene, this is a tough one in this economy.  There was a time when anyone coming out of a driving school could find immediate employment but carriers can be more selective now.  The cost to hire a new driver is a substantial investment to the carrier so they want to screen out the inexperienced.
Long term the outlook is better with an anticipated return to driver shortages when the economy recovers.  Any company that will hire you with a new CDL and no experience will probably not be the type of company you will want to stay at long term.  That being said however if you are willing to put in the time and maintain a safe driving record, you will get the experience to move on to a better job when demand returns.  No easy answers, just be realistic.  Good luck.  Jim.
