Trucking: Leased to company that lost big accounts, direct shippers, broker loads

Question
The company I'm leased to (owner-operator only) lost a couple of main accounts (had their eggs in one basket), and now we can't get enough loads to make a living. I have 30 years in trucking and was a drop-deck owner-operator many years ago.  The big money from years past is gone, and I don't have the contacts anymore. I thinks it's time to buy a trailer and get my own authority again. I'm wondering if there is a living to made using brokers and load boards till one can establish a few accounts? Should I invest in a reefer from the get go?

Answer
Tim, in this tough economy there are too many trucks chasing too few loads.  I don't think you can build a profitable business on broker loads.  They have their place and can get you back home or moving when all else fails but you really need a few regular direct shippers that value your service.  My best advise is to find the shippers first then get the equipment to their needs.  If you know who got the accounts from the company you are leased to you can always find out if they need owner operators to handle the new business.  You would have an inside track since you are familiar with the freight.
Best of luck whatever you do.
Jim.
