Trucking: Requirements for Driving Bob Trucks, straight truck, cdl


Question
I have been told that I do not have to have a class A CDL to drive a company bob truck it he weight is under a certain limit.  Can you please let me know what the requirements are.

The threshold for driving a straight truck without requiring a CDL is 26,000 lbs GVWR of the truck.  If the GVWR is 26,001 or greater you'd need a CDL. (The GVWR is usually found on a decal on the door jamb of the driver's side door)  That assumes you're not hauling passengers or HazMat in quantities great enough to require placards.
