Trucking: Owner Operator, nuts and bolts, god bless israel

Question
I am tired of being a company driver.

I know that Penske rents trucks by the week to drivers.

Can you tell me something about the nuts and bolts of just getting a truck from them and then buying some insurance to go with it? Can a person buy insurance for only a month at a time?

The price of a truck is about $625 per week (easy), but what about signing onto a company and then pulling freight for them? Are a lot of companies grudging to allow such things? Why don't more people just rent a truck from Penske to become owner operators? There has to be something more to it.

Answer
Hi Lemas,

I don't know much about renting a tractor from Ryder or Penske. From what my brother has told me, they charge so much a week and so much per mile. I think you'll find it to be more expensive to rent. You can lease tractors from dealerships if you don't want to buy one. I don't recommend buying or leasing through the company you plan to drive for. You will pay way more than needed. I don't know much else to say, maybe this helps some.

God Bless, Israel
